Artist’s Statement

I am  a painter – I graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 2005.   Drawing and painting are my big things, but I also do other stuff  –                                                              installations, performance – I do poetry and song writing.

Eleanor Carlingford

How do you know who you are ?  That’s really what I’m grappling with all the time in my work.

How do you get the hang of life and how to act and react.  As far as I’m concerned life going on all around us

with its endless noise just seems to drown out the wee voice inside.  So, what is my identity?  Is being Irish or

Scottish, Catholic or Protestant, male or female, short or tall, good at maths, fond of ska or world music,

vegetarian/grumpy/extroverted/patient/disabled///is any or all of this the defining thing?  I don’t think so.

I believe that for the most part people become a version of what they have learned that they are.  I believe that

true identity emerges gradually.  It takes dedication to hear that inner voice.
